Big Waves, Big Challenges
Drains to Ocean is pleased to announce professional surfer and eco conservationist Ahmed Pérez as their new International Surf Ambassador. His first act as a D2O Ambassador will be joining a California Statewide effort to clean up our coastline on California Coastal Cleanup Day.  Ahmed will be taking over Drains to Ocean’s Instagram and Facebook pages on September 21st (@drainstoocean and @ahmedperezg.) He will specifically highlight the September 21st Santa Ana River Marsh Cleanup at the Huntington and Newport Beach River Jetty.  This Southern California marsh and its’ proximity to a famous surf spot is a perfect example of many coastal ecosystems currently being threatened by our global pollution crisis.

The Saltwater Artshow was held on June 8th.  It was a Drains to Ocean Benefit in tribute of World Oceans Day. The D2O Art Show featured over 20 artists from all over Coastal California and other regions.  The event highlighted artwork inspired by the ocean and waved themed art. Over a hundred people attended the event and had the opportunity to enjoy local artists' unique perspectives on the ocean.  Some of the pieces were beautiful -- inspiring us to find a space for them in our homes, some ugly -- forcing us to reflect on the devastating impacts of water pollution, and others just plain inspirational-- giving us the opportunity to be creative and interpret the art in our own way.  No matter the impact of the art, there is no doubt that all those that attended the event had a great time. In addition to the art, there was a bar, karaoke and lots of good people sharing their stoke for surf and for the ocean.  Good times were had by all and Drains to Ocean looks forward to their 2nd Annual Saltwater Art Show next year.

Featured Ocean Artists:
Rick Blake • Bryan Helfand • Johsua B. Paskowitz • Chuy Madrigal • Torquato • Jose Cerda • Anat Ronen • Michael Tilden • Lauren Paster • Sam Bernal • Pierce Kavanagh • Cameron Calderon • Thad Matson • Angie Granheim • Nathan Paul Gibbs • Matt Harward • Madison Hickman • Bradie Shemke • Seth Matson • Mathew Wehrer • Robby Haugen • Brian Magar • Tommy Tear & more...

This event would not have been possible without the generosity of its sponsors, artists, and volunteers. A huge shout out to all the artists that donated their work and to Lagunitas and Eco Products for sponsoring the event. We would like to additionally recognize and thank the Artery for hosting us at the LAB in Costa Mesa. Lastly, we'd like to send a big thank you to all those that volunteered at the event; without their generosity, the Saltwater Art Show would not have been possible. It takes a village and thanks to all of these community partners coming together, Drains to Ocean was able to raise money to go directly towards their community outreach and programming.

We raised just over $1,250 for the night. If you are interested in taking a look at some of the art pieces from the event or possibly purchasing artwork, please contact us at info@drainstoocean.org. All the proceeds from artwork purchased online will go directly towards Drains to Oceans Programs.

We are looking forward to next years event!

The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Surf Off went off the hook with 4-5ft+ waves but was trashier than ever.

Thanks to over one hundred volunteers who came out to help clean the beach; we collected over 120 lbs of trash on the day of the event!

Additionally, we had 96 surfers (ranging in ages from 7 to 60) compete for the 2019 RRR Surf Off Title. Most competitors came with their families, making for an event that was full of laughs, silliness and lots of love for each other and the ocean. There were groms of all ages (toddlers, kids and teens,) moms, dads and grandparents – all coming together to share their stoke for the Huntington Beach community and helping to make our environment cleaner. Below are the first place rippers!

Over the summer we setup a super fun beach cleanup in Costa Rica. Along with the crew from Lapoint Surf Camp, we removed 83lbs (37.5 kilos) of trash off the beach in beautiful Playa Carmen Beach. We found a hypodermic needle, a my little pony doll, a lot of straws, tons of styrofoam, a lightbulb and a lot of one-time-use plastics. Interestingly we didn’t find any cigarette butts. Thanks to all the volunteers that participated.  @lapointcamps @drainstoocean#lapointcamps #drainstoocean #beachcleanup #costarica #puravida #cleanbeaches
