Drains to Ocean is back for its 3rd Annual RRR Surf Off that Focuses On Building Environmental Action

[Huntington Beach, California] April 23rd, 2019

Non-Profit Drains to Ocean is back again with its unique Reduce Reuse Recycle Surf Off contest in Surf City, Huntington Beach, California. The event includes everything from recycled and reclaimed surf trophies made with plastic collected from beach cleanups to a big bag of eco-friendly prizes for the winners in each division. The Surf Off is scheduled to be held at 9th St. on May 18th, 2019 from 8am to 4:30pm. Registering in the Surf Off requires a $30 donation, which also entitles you to a free event t-shirt, a free Sambazon Bowl, refreshments from Suja and a free one-year membership to Drains to Ocean. For those not surfing, look for the blue tent and signs for the beach cleanup that runs from 8am – 12pm.

This one of a kind surfing event encourages competitors, beginner, and advanced, to learn about ongoing issues of litter on our local city streets and beaches, causing water pollution in our oceans.

The program has six different divisions for the public signup so that people can enjoy a fun-filled beach day with their friends, family, and colleagues.

Divisions include: Groms (11& under), Youth (12-17), Mens (18-29), Girls (All Ages) Masters (30 & Up) and Longboard (All Ages).

When contacted, Seth Matson, President of Drains to Ocean said, “Last years event was super fun! We had a great turnout, great surfing and an all-around good vibe down at the beach.”

He further added, “We are doing some cool new “eco” things with our event this year like using Ozone Safe Air Horns, Eco Friendly Propane Generator to power the event, re-using past events jerseys, offering organic surf wax from Matunas to the contestants, and of course we make our own unique, custom made recycled and repurposed surf trophies for all the winners in each division.

Drains to Oceans Vice President and Pro Surfer Jeff Deffenbaugh said, “This year, we are encouraging the contestants to ditch the plastic water bottles and bring only reusable bottles, carpool with a buddy or ride your bike to the event for a smaller CO2 footprint, participate in our beach cleanup and to always pack it in and pack it out. Most of us surfers grew up at the beach and it’s our responsibility to help keep it clean, even if it’s not our trash. Pick up a few pieces every time you go for a surf and throw it in the trash. It’s pretty simple.”

Sponsors will also hand out some cool eco prizes to the finalists of the RRR Surf Off which includes reusable bottles from Hydroflask, Slater Designs Algae Foam traction pads, reusable bags from Earthpack, organic surf wax from Matunas, reef friendly sunblock from Surf Yogis, the Cove and Racing Extinction DVD’s from Ocean Preservation Society, cool paper straws from Aardvark, stainless steel straws from U-Konserve, Boxed Water, among many other awesome sponsor prizes.

In addition to our educational programs we will have other NGO’s joining us at the Beach Cleanup including: 5 Gyres, the Sierra Club, Bolsa Chica Land Trust, OC Earth Stewards, Heirs to Our Oceans and more.

This event helps fund many of our programs, including our Annual Eco Artshow being held on World Oceans Day – June 8th at the Artery in Costa Mesa, our Recycle Your Butts program and our Cleanups.

Online bookings for the surfing event are currently open at www.rrrsurfoff.com and you can sign up in person at 17th Street Board Shop in downtown Huntington Beach. Entry deadline is on May 14th.

This is an open event, so everyone is invited to come and join. Bring your family and friends to help clean the beach, watch awesome surfers compete and enjoy some fun in the sun in beautiful Surf City, California.

The Award Ceremony will feature live music from The Ramsey Brothers Band and a raffle/drawing for a brand new Catch Surf Surfboard, plus other cool stuff from event sponsors.
