Press Release - Local HB Non-profit - Earth Day Drive in Surf Movies

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Ride the waves of change and hope with Drains to Ocean to honor and celebrate Earth Day.

On Friday April 23 and Saturday April 24, 2021, Drains To Ocean, a non-profit 501-3c charitable organization benefiting ocean clean-up efforts locally and globally will host three family friendly and fun events: Two classic surf movies and a Saturday morning “neighborhood to the beach” clean-up.

Enjoy the old-time fun of a “drive-in” style movie experience at family-friendly event in Huntington Beach. Friday evening, Bruce Brown’s “The Endless Summer II” will be the feature film, and Saturday evening, world renowned surfer, Shaun Thompson’s “Bustin’ Down the Door” will be shown.

“The Endless Summer II” was written, directed and edited by surfer-filmmaker Bruce Brown with his son Dana 30 years after Bruce created the original classic surf film, “The Endless Summer.” The follow-up sequel features professional surfers Pat O'Connell and Robert "Wingnut" Weaver as they retrace the steps of Mike Hynson and Robert August in search of that perfect wave. Follow along with Wingnut, an experienced longboarder, and Pat O'Connell, who excels at shortboarding as they surf amazing waves all around the world in “The Endless Summer II.”

“Bustin’ Down the Door” is a ground breaking action-packed documentary that takes us back to the winter of 1975 in Hawaii--a dramatic moment in history, when a group of young South African and Australian surfers sacrificed everything to explore and master the waves of Hawaii. It features legendary pro-surfers: Shaun Tomson, Wayne Bartholomew, Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Tom Curren and more. This film was narrated by Edward Norton.

First world surf champion and Huntington Beach local “PT” Peter Townend will be at both movie nights, as he is featured in Saturday nights’ “Bustin’ Down the Door” film. PT is great friends with everyone in the film and said this about upcoming weekends’ fundraiser, “I’m attached to both these great surf movies, of course as a star in “Bustin’ Down the Door”, but I was also Marketing Director for Rusty Surfboards when “Endless Summer II” was produced. Pat O’Connell was our star team rider, and that was huge for the Rusty brand."

Due to Covid-19 restrictions and social distancing, space is limited, and this will sell out fast so be sure to reserve your spot and buy tickets asap. Each ticket grants entry to one vehicle with one parking space and accommodates up to six people. Parking spaces will have a small area behind them for outdoor viewing under the stars and tailgating so remember to bring beach chairs.

In addition to celebrating surf and enjoying a night outdoors with our friends and family, we will be raising money for a local nonprofit organization. All proceeds from the event will benefit Drains to Ocean’s environmental & education programs. “This is the 2nd year in a row we’ve had to cancel our RRR Surf Off event due to Covid-19, but we love getting together with our local community and showing these classic surf flicks and doing a cleanup to celebrate Earth Day,” said Seth Matson, the president and founder of Drains to Ocean.

Local surf artists Bradie Shemke and Cameron Calderon have created limited edition hats and tees available for sale with 100% of the proceeds going to Drains to Ocean.

44yr old Bradie Shemke – www.bradieshemkecreative.com

Hurley surf apparel artist, Bradie Shemke, donated this custom Earth Day t-shirt design for Drains to Ocean’s upcoming fundraiser. He’s a surfer and father, and clean water is an environmental issue that is especially important to him. "The ocean is a special place for everyone to enjoy and home to many creatures. It is important we make an effort to keep it clean.” said Shemke

38yr old Cameron Calderon – Sueños | Sitios Art and Design

Long Beach Surf Artist Cameron Calderon designed a custom trucker hat and a painting he will be auctioning off to help raise additional funds for Drains to Ocean. Calderon is a self-taught artist working primarily in acrylic, his travels through California and Mexico define his work.  As a surfer, mechanic and artist, Cameron takes a large quantity of inspiration from the Southern California lifestyle. Calderon outlines why he wanted to support Drains to Ocean, “As humans we’ve successfully tarnished every terrestrial surface of this planet, and that directly impacts our oceans...we can do better.”

This event is free and a great opportunity to get involved in the local community effort to keep the beaches clean.

The Drive in will be held on Friday and Saturday night in the huge parking lot at the Lutheran Church-Resurrection on Hamilton St., but you must pre-purchase tickets to get in. To purchase tickets and find out full details for this Earth Day event, go to www.drainstoocean.org
